Pet Bike Trailers Review

There are a few choices when it comes to pet bike trailers. They are all sturdy and safe, the decision will come with the options, and the size of your pet (and if you have more than one). And of course what you are willing to spend.

When it comes to bike trailers for pets there are a lot more options these days than there used to be. However, you’ll still find the major players, including Solvit, Bestpet, and Aosom. You’ll find even companies well known for making bike trailers for kids are getting into the pet bike trailer game as well. Well known names like Burley are getting in the action with their Tail Wagon bike trailer for dogs.

So let’s take a look at some of the options and see what might be best for you.

Solvit Houndabout Pet Bike Trailer

Solvit Bike Trailers

Solvit is a well know, and well respected name in the pet stroller industry. You’ll find the most popular model when it comes to bike trailers from Solvit is The Houndabout. This pet bike trailers come in medium and large versions, which one is right for you will depend on the size of your pet.

The Houndabout usually starts at just under $200, and you can find a much reduced price for the trailer at Amazon.com

It comes with a hitch, and putting it together takes no tools, and can be done in just a few minutes.

The medium sized for both trailers will hold dogs up to 50 pounds. The larger models will hold dogs up to 110 pounds.

Other features of the Houndabout:

  • steel frame, and sturdy 600D polyester construction
  • washable, waterproof floor
  • zippered mesh screens, as well as zippered vinyl cover to keep out the wind and weather
  • conversion kit to make it a jogger stroller is available at an additional cost

We’ve found the best price for the Houndabout Bike Trailer on Amazon.com… be aware though, it looks as though Amazon has mixed up the medium and large stroller descriptions.

BestPet Bike Trailers

BestPet Bike Trailer

BestPet is a leader in the pet stroller industry. Their classic 4 wheel pet strollers are a favorite among many. You’ll find their bike trailer comes in a variety of colors, which isn’t true for many of the other bike trailer companies. This one comes in beige, red plaid, pink, blue, black, even camouflage.

The BestPet bike trailer series is intended for smaller dogs. You’ll find the weight limit for all the BestPet bike trailers is 55 pounds. The quality of these bike trailers is excellent, just as all of their regular pet strollers are. Some people have had issues getting the wheels on the stroller and having them be sturdy, but those complaints have been minimal.

Here’s some of the features of the BestPet bike trailers:

  • 600D, UV resistant, water repellent material used in construction
  • 16 inch wheels make for a smooth ride
  • conversion kit to make it a jogger is available at an additional charge
  • mesh on three sides allows for airflow and great viewing
  • drop down rain shield included
  • bike hitch included, will attach to any bike
  • front and rear entry for your pet
  • easy assembly

You’ll find the price point of this stroller is lower than the Solvit strollers, generally coming in just under 100 dollars. You can a good deal on this stroller, whatever color you choose, on Amazon.com

Aosom Pet Bike Trailer

AOSOM Pet bike trailer

Aosom is the third of the companies we’ll be reviewing in our pet bike trailer reviews. This pet bike trailer comes in red with black trim. It is also best for medium sized pets. The weight limit on this bike trailer is 66 pounds. This stroller is made of steel, which makes it much heavier than other models. It’s been stated this trailer weighs over 40 pounds, which can be quite heavy, especially with the addition of a 60 pound dog, to tow behind your bike.

The other complaint people have had about this bike trailer is it does not offer a jogger conversion kit.

Here’s some features of the AOSOM Pet bike trailer

  • removable rain cover for front door
  • sturdy steel frame
  • mesh zippered screen for front and back
  • leash hook inside the riding area
  • comes with free bike hitch

The price point for this stroller is just under 200 dollars, but you can find it for under 100 at Amazon.com

Pet Strollers ~ Which Are Easiest to Fold and Store?

One question people looking to purchase a pet stroller ask is which pet stroller is easiest to fold and store. Before we can answer that question you need to ask yourself “Which is more important–having a pet stroller that is collapsible or one that offers a detachable carrier?” This is important because the pet strollers that fold the easiest do not come with detachable carriers, while the ones with detachable carriers are not the easiest to fold and store.

The easiest to fold are the Happy Trails Pet Stroller, Happy Trails PLUS Pet Stroller, and the AT3 Pet Stroller. With each of these models, you simply slide one button with your thumb (the lock), depress the large button on the handle (the release), and then immediately and easily fold to 15″ to 18″ high.

Here’s a video showing the process of folding the AT3 All Terrain Pet Stroller.

The Walk ‘n Roll Pet Stroller is also easy to fold. It requires two hands, since the brackets on either side must be slipped upward to release the lock and fold the stroller to less than 10″ high. The Walk ‘n Roll is smaller than the Happy Trails, so the size of your pet and the amount of room your pet desires will affect which stroller you select.

Here’s a quick video showing the Walk n’ Roll Pet Stroller being folded.

The line of strollers from Kittywalk do not fold as easily as the other pet strollers. The stroller portion of the Kittywalk collapses flat, but the carrier portion can be collapsed only by removing a number of braces. While the other pet strollers collapse in seconds, the Kittywalk strollers require a couple minutes of effort to collapse and reassemble.

Don’t get me wrong, the Kittywalk pet strollers are still very recommendable–they are very sturdy, spacious, and functional. One benefit the Kittywalk has the others don’t is that the carrier portion is detachable. Other benefits include the variety of sizes, styles, and colors available, the fact the stroller portion can be used without the carrier to roll groceries or other light loads, and the privacy area that permits your pet some solitude while in the pet stroller.

This should give you a good idea of the folding abilities of different pet strollers. Just make sure you know what you need from a pet stroller before you buy. Do you need one that folds quickly and easily or do you need a detachable carrier? Answering this question for yourself will help you find the perfect pet stroller for you and your pet.

If you’ve decided on one of the pet strollers mentioned in this article you can find them here.

AT3 Pet Stroller Review

The AT3 is the largest of the pet strollers, accommodating pets up to 60 pounds. It is marketed as a combination jogging pet stroller and off-road pet stroller, and it is certainly the most rugged model available, so if you want to move fast or go over rougher terrain, the AT3 may be your best choice.

Here are some benefits of the AT3 Pet Stroller:

AT3 Pet Stroller Benefits:

  • Front wheel lockable and removable–the front wheel can be removed for storage and transport, and when in use you can either lock the wheel straight ahead (great for speed) or allow it to swivel (great for maneuverability).
  • Rain and wind cover–protect your pet from the elements with a rain and wind cover that completely surrounds the stroller while still providing windows so your pet can see.
  • Storage–the AT3 pet stroller’s parent tray on the handles and large mesh basket underneath provides plenty of carrying ability.
  • Brakes–Very solid brake mechanism that locks the rear wheels in place.
  • Other AT3 benefits include shock absorbers on the rear tires, water-repellent nylon, and three-wheel design for stability while jogging or heading over turf or light trails.

Rating:
I bought this for my beagle (show puppy), as we go to a lot of shows and when on the road, we like to go places… Well, it is so great that I now use it at the show too–we put his grooming equipment in the bottom tray, and he stands in the bed while I get him ready. Before and after the class, he just sleeps in his bed. So simple! I used to be the only one there with one of these, but now after a few shows, others are catching on, too.

My kids say that this stroller is better than the one I had for them when they were babies–and they are right. This is stable, easy to steer, etc.

Oh, and when I get another show beagle, she will fit in, too. Such a deal!

(Oh, and I paid full price for mine, so the Friday sale price is amazing!!!)

I just purchased the Pet Gear All Terrain Pet Stroller. I previously though that pet strollers were really silly products, but when I purchased a new puppy, I realized that I needed a stroller that would allow me to take the puppy along while I exercised my other dog. I highly recommend this stroller, the large wheels which easily turn in all directions makes it easy to manage one dog and the stroller. The entire unit moves across sidewalks and grass very smoothly so that jogging with any dog under 50 lbs is easy. The design has large compartments for water bottles, pets dishes and food, in addition to any articles that I want to take to the park. In addition, the pet compartment is roomy and well ventilated and has additional weather protection covers. My puppy could see everything through the large front and back panels and play with her toys. The only disadvantage is its size when folded. The stroller collapses and has good brakes, but the front wheel prevents the unit from collapsing flat, which can take up a lot of room a car.

Review by Kathleen San Martino for Pet Gear AT3 All-Terrain Pet Stroller for cats and dogs up to 60-pounds, Red Poppy
Rating:
I purchased this for my two cats because they seemed bored being cooped up in the house all day and needed something other than my daily play sessions with them. I love the stroller, although one of my cats hasn’t gotten use to it yet. The fat one didn’t want to come out after I took him home.

I gave the unit a 4 because of the second Con and the fact that the first unit was defective due to how tightly they design the front.

Pros:

- Excellent size for two cats (one fat one and one normal size) – you can probably even get three normal-sized cats in it comfortably

- It’s so easy to push, pull, and go up and down stairs with (I live on the 2nd floor) – there is a certain “give” in the wheels when going up and down stairs as if the unit had shocks – a very nice feature and feel.

- Has ample storage – tray holder, the under cab pocket, and the tray on the bottom under this pocket

- Ride is very smooth

- It’s nice that it collapses, even though it doesn’t fold flat – front cab has to be unzippered for you to collapse

- Excellent brakes, though a little difficult for me to release once engaged

- Great design in that it has both a front and back entrance for your pets

- It’s nice to have the rain cover just in case, though some may have a hard time figuring out how it goes on. I store it in the pocket under the cab.

Cons:

- Assembly instructions are incomplete so you must guess a little

- Front cab is a bit tightly assembled so it is very difficult to zipper the front (this was the case on both the strollers I got–the torn one and its replacement). Since I don’t fold the stroller, I keep the cab zippered in front and let the cats in the back. There is more “slack” on the back entryway and zipper.

- Takes up a lot of space when folded; although the fact that you can fold it is a BIG plus

First stroller I received had a tear in the mesh. I noticed it after I assembled the entire unit and was ready to zip my cats in. So be sure to check that the stroller mesh is not defective before you assemble the unit since unassembling it is was worse than assembling it. Amazon sent me another stroller immediately.

Overall I’m very pleased with the stroller.

Review by Margaret J. Kirk for Pet Gear AT3 All-Terrain Pet Stroller for cats and dogs up to 60-pounds, Red Poppy
Rating:
I purchased the pet stroller because I have an older Westie who still wants to go for walks with us, but tires out before we get back home. I was concerned about how sturdy the stroller would be because we walk on ditch roads that are not paved, and are anything but smooth. It really does work well! My dog enjoys riding in it, and especially enjoys being able to go out for the long walks again (and I don’t end up having to carry him home.) The stroller is very easy to maneuver, and easy to set-up and collapse. It is still rather large when collapsed, so I really don’t bother to collapse it very often. I really would recommend this item. It was much less expensive than other models I considered, and I am really pleased with it. Thank you!
